Maybe I'm wrong, but in the past with lower voltage controllers, I think you could use direct burial wire. With new controllers pushing 600v is that still true? Is conduit required? IIRC, you can't put direct burial in conduit. right?

If this is being inspected you should ask the inspector what he requires.
 You can do pretty much what you choose and for offgrid I would just say be very careful of rodents destroying your wiring. Go deep and in big conduit unless you want to do it again.
