Possible end of dependancy on fossil fuels?

Just ran across this article. Interesting read and hopefully can be developed into a practical replacement for fossil fuels. Thoughts?

The wife and I are pretty close now, we use about 3 therms of gas a month, very expensive with all the fees @ $17 with about $4 in usage charges.  We drive 2 Chevy Volts  so our gasoline day to day is nil and over the 5 years it is well under 200 gallons total and our solar system takes care of the electric bill.

It is all about diminishing returns, could I reduce further? Probably, but at what cost.
