Is it possible to run one inverter on 2 battery banks at the same time

If you do, the two battery banks are not two banks... they are one bank.  The two battery banks should be as identical as possible if you are going to combine them. 

I assume that both banks are the same voltage and that you will be putting them in parallel.  If each of the battery banks has parallel strings, then combining the banks will give you too many parallel strings.
