A friend is going to mount one of these outdoors. The manual says "no direct sunlight". I am thinking a small roof over the unit to keep the sun off it. Has anyone done this? THX !

Yes , just fine to do this. 2 reasons for that.
Inverter is giant heat sink and any help in cooling is good.
Digital display becomes opaque and hard to read from direct sunlight.
