I'll be impressed when someone comes up with a really simple device that efficiently converts thermal gradients into electricity. It should be as simple as a thermocouple or PV cell. It should be able to operate a wide range of temperatures from 0 to 4000k would be very useful. You could then use any substance with a high melting point and good specific heat capacity as a battery. You could even use it to turn sunlight into electricity. It just needs to be simple, cheap and efficient. Just do it....
