The "Will This Work?" question.

We get that question often about many things. People normally want a digital answer: yes or no. But in engineering where there is always six ways of doing any one thing the answer is rarely "this is the only way, all else is wrong". There are degrees of effectiveness, practicality, and value. Sometimes we make judgement calls about a situation based on what information is provided coupled with personal experience and values and convert the analog answer into a digital yes or no. This is nearly always done without the fifty paragraphs of explanation of how we came to that conclusion.

And so we present the scale of effectiveness:

1). This is the best you can possibly do.
2). This will work fairly well but has limitations.
3). This will do in a pinch but there's a lot of room for improvement.
4). This will not make you happy with your system.
5). This works like government; costs too much and is ineffectual.
6). This doesn't work at all no matter how much you want it to.
7). The fire department is going to build a satellite station in your yard.

We try for #1, settle for #2, and avoid #7 at all costs.

I love this, it should be mandatory in all postings!
