On my line drawing from Blue Pacific Solar, they have 3-#8 awg and 1 #10 ground from magnum ms4448pae to 200 amp breaker panel 120/240ac. Some reason I thought the wires from inverter to ac panel would have been larger.

Specs on the inverter state 4400 watts. 4400/240 volts = 18.3 amps. Assuming double that on surge, you're looking at perhaps 40 amps AC per output leg. #8 wire is usually fused/breakered at 40 amps, so it would appear OK to handle the full output from your inverter.

So why have a "200 amp" main breaker ? Seems overkill.

Isn't the 200A main breaker your house service panel?

Yes, so why a 200amp main with only 2-40amp capacity wires feeding it?

If you every get utility power, there is no need to re-panel the home. Does not cost a lot more now--Vs redoing a home sometime in the future.

In some cases, a building inspector may even require an off grid home to have "utility grade" panel+basic wiring requirements (one even required an AC meter socket for an off grid power system for a poster here).
