The tripling of power from wind and solar they mention in the article is only just the beginning of what will have to happen to reduce CO2 emissions. On the other hand, at the rate new capacity for wind and solar have been going in, tripling won't take more than a few years.

Another way to look at this is that within the next 100 years we would need a massive shift in energy sources anyway. Climate change aside, it's just getting too expensive to dig fossil fuels out of the ground at the current rate.

Since neither the US nor Canada have a comprehensive national energy policy and any regulations regarding alternative generation can be changed on a political whim the expansion of solar and wind can be halted and even reverse in the time it takes to hold an election. This is a really big problem.

And until China and India plus North America put ink to paper, there will not be an organized shift at a country level . As noted above, there are other forces in play, like Chinas solution to what to do with millions of excess PV production... well they are using them inside their borders... a partial solution to an economic problem... And Pakistan has a program to promote PV powered water pumping , in place for about 3 years so far, another boost to PV...
