Any success with RS232 to bluetooth adapters

I'd love to link my sunsaver MPPT in a shed to my PC in the house. I bought a RS232 to bluetooth adapter that works fine (tested with putty s/w and pins 2 and 3 shorted so that everything sent is echoed back) but for the life of me I cannot get it to work with the Morningstar meterbus adapter -> RS232 <-> Bluetooth <-> PC and MSView. I see comms occuring - link light on meterbus flashes, but MSView never discovers sunsaver. I've tried signal boosters, providing a negative voltage rail (per the morningstar materials).
Has anyone else tried and succeeded with this idea?
Thanks
