I knew all those years of study were a waste of time and money.

Discussion between the experts leads to more questions! But lots of new info to digest.
A sudden over-Voltage condition can shut down an inverter - or possibly even pop a component.
When does an over voltage situation happen ? A Bad controller not regulating proper voltage ?

There are numerous scenarios that would qualify as over-Voltage, ranging from setting charge Voltage too high for the inverter's input specifications to a failed controller pushing battery Voltage too high to a transient Voltage spike on the wiring (such as stray Voltage from nearby lightning might cause).

On the whole, it is not a major concern. Avoid poor-quality equipment (an inexpensive 12 Volt inverter is more likely to have less Voltage tolerance than a high-end unit). Make sure settings and wiring are all correct for the system and connections are tight. Install lightning protection if you are in an area of high strike incidents.
