FLA and VRLA batery minimum voltage per cell?

I was discussing a potential connection design for a VRLA battery bank with a friend with an electronics background, he stated that

' due to inherent properties of a FLA battery the minimum voltage will be 2 V per cell'.

Is this claim correct? I don't recall ever seeing anything to the contrary.

I read through Wikipedia and did not find an answer.
TIA

Eric

To the best of my knowledge the nominal cell Voltage on lead-acids is 2 VPC.
Dead batteries can read a lot lower. Fully charged batteries will read higher.

I have vague recollections of some physics problems arising if you try to stack too many plates in one cell to achieve higher Voltages, which is why batteries tend to be made up of groups of 2 Volt cells connected "externally" (even though these days the connections are usually inside the case they are still considered 'external' because they are not part of the plate stack).

Chemistry. That's the thing I think you're looking for. Different types of electrodes and electrolyte produce different inherent cell Voltages. That's why NiCads are 1.3 Volts, Alkalines 1.5 Volts, lead-acids 2 Volts, Lithium 3 Volts ... like that.

(I now go back to thumping my head to get brain to work.) :p

thanks Marc, I think you got it... chemistry of Lead and H2SO4 acid.
