If not the controller, can you trace the current with a clamp meter? You should be able to see current coming out of the battery and if it is going somewhere else it should be traceable1 · -

If it were me I'd get a quality MPPT charge controller and swap it with the Aims unit. This will likely solve your problem, seeing as it started when you installed it.1 · -
