Here's one low tech way to do it:

Just at this moment watching PBS- East. Program is on the American grid power system. The more I see of it, the more I'm glad I can live off grid. Not joking!

Not sure we need the solar flare. According to someone I know who knows about these things for decades they've been "plugging extension cords into cube taps and cube taps into the extension cords". The grid stays functioning mainly because people don't "max it out" except occasionally. That's when you get those wide-spread cascade failures that put millions in the dark.

When the economics of it hits (if it hasn't truly already) they'll realize the virtue of localized power production. You know; the way it was 100+ years ago.

And we go 'round the circle again.

We have the problem of oversupply in the PNW. Plenty of power but no place to send it.

From everything I've heard, read and seen in person, and according to the PBS program I watched the other night, this is an excellent parody of what our power companies have been doing. It's all about the quick, cheap and easy fix for today, making a profit in the next quarter above all other concerns, and let tomorrow take care of itself.
Unfortunately our political systems now works on this same self-destructive principal.

not being political but that 'today' attitude speaks loudly to why there were PUBLIC Utilities created, ie in BC, in the '50 / 60's, with one purpose in mind, a good quality, stable, long term (now called sustainable) source of reliable power... 8)
