this is a true off topic.
Is anyone on the forum a merchant marine????I was wondering if its at all possible for an older,50s,guy in good shape to get a job on a merchant vessel, maybe kitchen,
without a seamans card and not being in a union????
While we are at it...is it hard to get a seamans card??? What do you know???

you will need to get a USCG MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential) as a minimum. You can look at the USCG website ( homeport.uscg.mil) for more information. There is a forum gCaptain that has lots of discussions. Right now there is a big downturn for the oil field supply boats, but there are still tugs and other vessels.. A person starting out will be doing all the dirty jobs, etc. I started in the business in my 50's (but i had Navy experience). Good luck
