Good range topic?

Ok I swear we had a topic on here with someone buying a new gas range and talked about glowbars vs pilots vs electronic spark. I can't find it for the life of me and we need to buy a new range.

    Re: Good range topic?

Found out I don't like pilots. My parents home still has pilots on the old stove--can really smell them (natural gas)--plus now-a-days wasted energy costs. Also, gas pilot without the vent fan on makes for yellow/sticky walls.

Glow bars--one appliance repair man said he replaces them pretty regularly--they don't last that long (few years or a little more). Had a clamp-on amp meter to check current flow--if it was about 10-20% below normal (IIRC), he would replace the glow bar ("bad" bars would still glow, apparently just fine--just not quite hot enough to reliably light the fire).

Lastly, on spark ignition--our contractor installed the hot/neutral reversed (carpenter did not have a meter). The range top electronic sparks sort of worked. I would have never guessed hot/neutral polarity would have mattered.

Our stove has spark for range top (auto-relight if flame blows out) and glow-bars for oven/broiler. Other than when the "spark plug" gets wet, dirty or when a piece of foil (wive uses to keep stove top clean) gets near the spark-plug--have not had any problems (after the wiring fix) for that last ~2 years). Replaced a spark module on bother-in-law's central heat many years ago--easy and no further problems.

If you are going inverter power for the stove--I would probably stay away from Modified-Square/Sine-Wave style inverters (as you know better than I).

    What is your specific concern(s)?

    My 2 cents worth.

Glow bars are very intolerant of dirt/grease/oils much like a halogen lamp, grease creates a hot spot, and they fail.

    Brock,

I suspect you may be thinking about discussions over on the other forum that we frequent:

    Re: Good range topic?

Since I'm not registered on "that other board" 'cause another password will make my head explode, I have a question. I've now seen 3 types of igniters:

Turn to Start, it sparks, after lit, turn back to "whatever"

Turn to "whatever" and arc automatically fires till burner lights, and then shuts down, if burner goes out, sparks again till lit.

Turn to "whatever" and glowbar (hot surface igniter) lights gas, re-lites if flame blows out

I've listed them in what I assume would be in order of their power draw. (fancier ones take more power to do their functions) Am I right in assuming the power consumption and sequence. Any other igniter styles ?

I thought I was loosing it...

Now I, of course, ALWAYS remember everything.... RIGHT!!!!  :-o

    Mike,

How about just using the same username and password? Sorry I can't help with the igniters... I don't know much about 'em.

Mike I think you’re right on.  The trick is often the surface burners might be spark and the oven might be glow bar.  I am trying to avoid a glow bar all together to avoid the load.

Same user name a password works for me  ;)

No search function on teh other board  :(

what ever happened to using piezo-electric igniters like those on gas grills? they use no electricity whatsoever?

    Brock,

:?  There's a "Search" hot link just under the "Most Recent Posts" list... You may need to set your profile "Board Style" to "Default" in order to reveal the link.

no profit for whom? the people that sell them are making some money. here's a link to some in a pdf: http://www.gasgrillsusa.com/pdf/ignitors.pdf
