Re: Need help understanding aspects of batteries

the best test for batteries is the load test. this is when a load of a specific amount for a particular battery is applied for a determined amount of time in which a certain level of voltage has been reached. most batteries are rated for 20hrs with a draw equal to 1/20th of the ah rating for 20hrs. this is to take the battery down to 10.5v which is considered dead or 100% depth of discharge or 0% state of charge. manufacturers may vary on their testing so it is advisable to check with them on how to go about it.
the load test is stressfull to a battery, especially if taken to 100% dod, and many of us opt to check battery condition by the at rest voltage and specific gravity readings along with meters that are capable of roughly calculating the general condition.
