I have a few off grid questions beyond the scope of this forum, such as on portable propane tanks, heaters, and wood burning fireplaces, and am wondering if anyone has any forums to recomend for those topics? Thanks

Some random sites I have ran across before:

    http://www.hearth.com/
Antique Engines Antique Tractors Steam Engines and Old Iron
    Honda_EU2000_Generators : Honda_EU2000_Generators
    http://builditsolar.com/

PS: I should add you are welcome to ask your questions here and have people point you to other forums/sources where you can get the answers and/or more detailed discussions.

Might be outside of the designated venue of this forum, but not outside the knowledge of its members. :D

Yes, many of us heat with wood, haul propane tanks, have tankless hot water heaters, et cetera. And certainly if there are any associated forums for such things someone here will know about them! (I won't 'volunteer' anyone else here, but I know there's members who could write books on this stuff.)

I just grew up with all this sort of thing and know from experience (some good, some bad). But I love perusing Build It Solar http://www.builditsolar.com/ and getting more ideas than I'll ever be able to deal with.

OK, cool, thanks a bunch for the links... As far as posting here, great, if that's allowed and encouraged, I certainly will. This particular sub-forum seems like the most relevant place...

I can confirm what 'coot says - I've gotten a lot of great info and learned a ton about non RE topics here.

Here's another active forum with lots of good off grid info:

Here's another good forum for heating/cooling info especially:
