Orientation of Solar Panels

Do both 12 volt panels connected in series have to be pointed in the same direction or could one be pointed more to the east to take advantage of the morning sun and the other to the south?

    panels in series, need the same oriention.

    If in parallel, with a PWM style controller, then yes, that is possible.

    Ideally both in the same direction. Otherwise it's the age old problem of "shading" on panels.
